INTRODUCING INVERTS - Cleaner Shrimp

Cleaner Shrimp, AKA Skunk Cleaner Shrimp
Lysmata amboinensis
Biggest Benefits:  This shrimp will groom parasites and debris from fishes.  Plus, they are so colorful & pretty and move around alot making for a very interesting tank resident.
Size & Required Tank Size:  They grow to about 2" in length and can be in tanks from Nano size & up.
Livespan: 2-3 yrs, but they are good years
Diet:  They pretty much fend for themselves, but will also eat most aquarium foods
Cautions:  Do not add excess to the water if you have a cleaner shrimp because it could cause premature molting & shorten their life span.
* Highly Recommended for all reef tanks.

ADOPT A FISH - PURPLE TANG

Hi, I am a Purple Tang and I am looking for a home made of glass with lots of salty nice water in it.  If you have one of these homes .... please can I come live with you.  Allow me to introduce myself.  My mother called me Zebrasoma xanthurum, but my friends call me the Purple Tang.  I can grow up to approx 9" and really shouldn't live in anything less than a 100 gal home.  I prefer 3 meals per day and like to eat a varied diet, with mostly vegetable matter.  Dried and frozen herbivore food that contain marine algae and the blue green algae are one of my favorites.  If you underfeed me be understanding if a nip a coral or 2. I am pretty easy to get along with and am not likely to start a fight with anyone, unless they are of my own kind because I prefer not to share the limelight. In fact, I prefer to be the feature fish and if given this role, I will not disappoint.

TID BIT of the DAY

Broccoli doesn't grow on the Great Barrier Reef!  Fish need a balanced diet rich in proteins and vegetables to maintain their health.  Food that is good for us isn't necessarily good for our fish.  Broccolli, lettuce, and Bok Choy are great for us, but none of these vegetables are the natural diets for your fish.  If it doesn't grow in the ocean, it shouldn't be on there menu.  Use a high quality spirulina based food or better yet, sheets of seaweed to round out your fishes diet.  Don't forget to add the vitamins to make up for anything that is lost in processing.
A fat fish is a happy fish.

TID BIT of the DAY

All CLAMS up to 3-4" in length are filter feeders, so they will need to be fed 2-3 times per week with Phytoplankton or Ultra Clam by Fauna Marin.  When they exceed 3-4" in length they are more dependent on lighting.  Again, another reason to make sure your lighting is appropriate for the livestock you keep and that the bulbs are changed at the appropriate intervals.

Let the sun shine in!  Corals derive the majority of their daily energy through photosynthesis.  Replace your bulbs at the recommended intervals to ensure your corals lighting needs are met and to prevent unwanted algae growth.

Very easy to take care of, moderate water flow, easy to feed (feeder tentacles will come out at night), feed meaty diet (mysis, brine), lighting requirements low to moderate.  They grow by encrusting over rock.  If they don't have a rock they will grow into a ball.  They can take high light (IE: halides) but they will just need to be acclimated to the light (IE: put low in tank first and move to permanent location later).

INVERTS OF THE WEEK - Feather Dusters & Coco Worms

FEATHER DUSTERS                  

   Feather Dusters can grow to 4" in diameter.  They can be kept in tanks 10 gal & up.  Lighting is not necessary other than you'll want a light to see them. LOL.  It feeds on particulate organic material and phytoplankton.  They require regular target feeding.  Supplemental feeding is necessary for long term success.  Does best in tanks with a good sand bed.

COCO WORMS

Coco Worm crowns can grow to 3" in diameter. They can be kept in tanks 10 gal & up. Lighting is not necessary other than you'll want a light to see them. LOL. It feeds on particulate organic material and phytoplankton. They require regular target feeding and moderate to strong currents. Supplemental feeding is necessary for long term success. They also need high levels of calcium, so if you have a Coco Worm watch your calcium levels and dose accordingly.

ADOPT A FISH

Featuring the BANGGAI CARDINAL (Pterapogon kauderni)

Hi,  I am an elegant hardy Black & Silver Cardinalfish, I am very easy to get along with and will do well in your Reef tank.  In fact, I am one of the only fish that can

successfully breed in captivity. 

I get a little grouchy when crowded, so I prefer to be by myself or with 1 other Banggaii  in a small tank (20 gal), but if the tank is larger (or large) I will behave with group of my own kind.  I behave best in a large tank, what can I say ... I like a big house.  I'm a lover, not a fighter, so please put me with non aggressive tankmates.

When you bring me home, make sure to have a stock of: meaty foods, crustacean flesh, mysis shrimp, and other frozen preparations.  Eventhough I eat everyday, I will only grow to about 3" in length.

THE BEST DEFENSE is a GOOD OFFENSE - Preventing disease is far easier then treating them!  Only buy fish that have been successfully quarantined (in a true quarantine system), provide a balanced diet, and supplement your foods with a high quality fatty acid, vitamin and mineral complex.

Aquarium Illusions quarantines our fish in a true quarantine system.  Next time you are in the store please ask the staff to show up how we quarantine our fish in 'independent systems'.  IE: When a shipment comes in, that shipment and only that shipment will house in one of our 3 large quarantine systems for the duration of their 2 week quarantine period. 

TID BIT of THE DAY

Variety is the Spice of Life.  Fish don't like to eat the samething day after day.  The ocean reef's are a smorgasboard of food selection (what may be missing from one food is present in the next food).  The healthiest fish are those that are presented with a variety of food.  Feed a variety of high protein frozen food, along with a quality dry food, seaweeds, garlic & vitamin supplements.  Even if your fish is just a vegetable eater ... there are varieties of seaweeds to feed.  Also, if your fish is a protein eater, there are several varieties of proteins that you can feed.
AI carries all the choices that are best for your fish.  We carry brands that we have researched & believe in.  Note:  All food is not the same.  Just like there are good brands of dog food and not so good brands - same goes for fish food.  Next time you are in, please check out our variety of high quality foods & supplements. A fat fish is a happy fish
